Grooming your cats is important in order to keep them clean and comfortable and to keep them from shedding heavily in your home. Grooming also keeps your pets at optimum levels of health, if done regularly.

The first and foremost thing you need to keep in mind when grooming your pet is to brush your cat regularly--especially if your cat has long hair. Short-haired cats aren’t as prone to having tangled hair and hair balls. You should brush your long-haired cat daily. You want to make sure your long-haired cat doesn’t have matted or tangled hair. If the hair is tangled too greatly, you may need to cut the hair off in order to remove the tangle. You shouldn’t leave a tangle untouched.

You should also trim your cat’s toenails on a regular basis. This will not only help protect your furniture and draperies from excessive scratching, but it also helps them walk more easily. If you are having problems with your cats scratching items around your house that you don’t want them to scratch, consider getting a scratching post for them to use. You will likely have to train them to scratch on the post the first few times, but once you get them used to the post, they’ll use it more regularly and you’ll be happier.

Check your cat’s face regularly. You’ll want to look inside its mouth and check to make sure its teeth look healthy. Clean their teeth on occasion. Wet a cloth and dip it in salt and baking soda and rub it on its teeth. This will help clean its gums and mouth and keep it healthy. Clean its eyes, too. To do this, use a mild salt-and-water mix. Use a cotton swab dipped in the mix to rub around the eyes.

You’ll want to get into a habit of grooming your pet regularly. Set a time--perhaps first thing in the morning--that will serve as the time when you’ll groom your cat. This is necessary to keep your cat healthy. You should start grooming your cat at an early age, so it gets used to being groomed and so you get used to grooming it. Starting early also makes keeping your pet healthy.
